What Is Blogging? (Beginner Friendly Explanation!)
Let’s break it down: Blog, Blogger & Blogging — what do they all really mean?
If you’ve ever wondered “What is a blog?” or you’re just getting started and confused by all the blogging lingo, don’t worry — you’re not alone. I’ve been there, too! So let me simplify it for you…
DEFINITION OF BLOG, BLOGGING & BLOGGER:
OK, let’s start at the very beginning. What exactly do the terms ‘blog’, ‘blogger’ and ‘blogging’ mean?
💻 WHAT IS A BLOG?
A blog is like your own personal (or business!) online magazine where new articles (blog posts) are never-ending. You might even think of it as a book with new chapters you’re always writing.
It’s a website where you regularly publish new content — also called blog posts. While blogs originally known as a ‘web log’, used to be more like online diaries (think journaling your thoughts or daily life), a little like many social media platforms are used today — yet blogging has evolved big time.
These days, blogs are often part of a much bigger picture — like building a brand, growing an audience, and yes, even online businesses’ making money online. Whether it’s a blog about parenting, productivity, or Pinterest tips, the possibilities are endless!

✍️ WHAT IS A BLOGGER?
A blogger is the person behind the blog, someone who owns and writes a blog. — That might be you someday (or maybe it already is)!
Bloggers do it all — from building the blog (website), designing it, and writing the content (blog posts), to promoting it on social media and figuring out ways to grow or monetize it. It’s part creative outlet, part online business… and 100% yours.
Some bloggers eventually outsource tasks like writing, editing, or tech help, but in the beginning, it’s totally normal to wear all the hats.
You could also say a blogger is a type of entrepreneur as, when a blogger creates a blog which they intent to monetize, they are essentially starting a small business.

🧠 WHAT IS BLOGGING?
Blogging is the act of running a blog.
It’s not just writing posts — it includes everything that goes into keeping your blog alive and thriving:
- Setting up your blog (website)
- Writing blog content (blog posts)
- Designing your layout or brand
- Promoting posts
- Engaging with readers
- (Eventually) earning from it
If you’re doing all that — guess what? You’re officially a blogger. 🎉

📝 WHAT IS A BLOG POST?
A blog post is one single article or piece of content on your blog.
It could be a how-to guide, a list of tips, a personal story, or even a product review. While blog posts once looked more like digital diary entries, today they tend to be much more helpful and search-friendly — designed to answer questions and solve problems for your readers.
In other words: It’s like writing a helpful article in a magazine… except you get to be the editor-in-chief.

What’s the Difference Between a Blog and a Blog Post?
The terms ‘blog’, ‘post’, and ‘blog post’ are very often misunderstood. This can definitely get confusing when you’re just starting out, so let me break it down simply…
💻 A blog is the entire website.
📝 A blog post (or just “post”) is one individual article published on that blog aka your website.
Think of it like this:
A blog is like your very own online magazine, and each blog post is one of the articles inside that magazine.
So when someone says, “I wrote 3 blogs this week,” what they probably mean is, “I wrote 3 blog posts.” (You’re not writing 3 entire websites in a week — that would be wild! 😅)
Or if someone tells you, “I loved your blog!” they likely mean they read and enjoyed one of your posts, not the entire site.
👉 Real-world example:
Let’s say your blog is called BornToBlogClub.com — that’s your blog (your whole website).
And if you published an article titled “What Is Blogging (Explained for Beginners)”, that’s one blog post on your blog.

How Is a Blog Different from a Website?
Another common confusion is the difference between a ‘blog’ and a ‘website’. This one trips up a lot of new bloggers, so let’s clear it up once and for all 👇
A blog is actually just a type of website.
The word “website” is a broad term that refers to any site on the internet — like Amazon, Facebook, or eBay. These are all websites, but they’re not blogs.
So what makes a blog different?
📝 A blog is a website that’s regularly updated with new content (called blog posts).
It’s usually run by one person (that might be you soon!) or a small team, and the content often feels personal — written in a casual, friendly tone, like you’re chatting with a friend.
Most blogs exist to share helpful content, and bloggers often earn money (based on the number of people visiting the blog) through ads, affiliate links, or digital products — rather than by selling physical stuff like a traditional online store would. Though these days, many bloggers also sell products and services via their blogs.
>> How To Create A Blog Website (in 5 minutes) EASY & FAST!
But wait… can a website have both?
Absolutely!
Confusingly, some kinds of non-blog websites have blogs on them. Meaning A lot of websites have a blog section — like a business or online store that includes a blog for sharing updates, tips, or industry news.
For example:
📷 A photographer might have a website that showcases their portfolio and booking info, but also includes a blog where they share behind-the-scenes stories, client sessions, or photo tips.
In that case, the blog is just one part of the larger website, whereas the rest of the website is used for something else – perhaps ecommerce or to advertise a brick-and-mortar business.
And while that person is technically “blogging,” they might not think of themselves as “a blogger” in the full-time, business-building sense of the word.

What Is the Main Purpose of a Blog?
The purpose of a blog can vary depending on who’s writing it — but these days, most blogs are created with one big goal in mind:
💰 To make money online.
But here’s the thing — money isn’t the only reason people blog.
Most bloggers (especially the successful ones!) are also super passionate about:
- ✨ Helping others
- ✨ Sharing what they know
- ✨ Inspiring or educating their audience
- ✨ Spreading a message or making an impact
Some bloggers still use their blogs as online diaries — a place to document life, reflect, or express themselves. That style of blogging is more rare now, but it’s totally valid, especially if you’re blogging just for fun or creative expression.
Whether you’re blogging to build a business, share your story, or create something meaningful — you’re in the right place.

How Do Blogs Make Money?
One of the best parts about blogging?
💸 It can turn into a real income stream — even a full-time business.
Blogs make money in a variety of ways, but here are the 5 most common methods: traditional advertising, affiliate links, sponsored posts, products and services.
1. 💻 Display Ads (Traditional Advertising)
Many bloggers make money via traditional advertising – displaying adverts for other companies in various different places on their website.
This is one of the most beginner-friendly ways to start earning.
With display ads, you allow advertising networks (like Google AdSense or Mediavine) to place ads on your blog — and you get paid based on how many people view or click on those ads. The more traffic ‘pageviews’ your blog gets, the more you can earn.
2. 🔗 Affiliate Marketing (aka Affiliate Links)
Affiliate links are like personal product recommendations — with a bonus. They are also a more subtle form of advertising.
You include special tracking links in your blog posts to products or tools you love. When a reader clicks your link and makes a purchase, you earn a small commission (at no extra cost to them). It’s a great way to earn passively by sharing what you genuinely use and believe in.
3. 🤝 Sponsored Blog Posts
Sponsored posts are another type of advertising. With sponsored blog posts, a brand pays you to write content that features their product, service, or message.
It’s kind of like an ad or “advertorial” in a magazine — but with your personal spin on it. You’re typically paid a flat one-time fee, and the pay isn’t dependent on how many clicks or sales you drive.
4. 🛒 Selling Your Own Products
Many bloggers create and sell their own products right from their blogs.
These could be:
- Digital products (like eBooks, online courses, or printables)
- Physical items (like merch, planners, or handmade goods)
For example, here at BornToBlogClub, I offer free AND paid resources to help bloggers build and grow their blogs step-by-step.
5. 👩💼 Offering Services
Many bloggers turn their skills into income by offering services — especially when they’re just getting started or want to add an extra stream of revenue.
This might include:
- Virtual assistant work
- Social media management
- Freelance writing or editing
- Tech help, branding, or consulting
👉 But that’s just the beginning.
There are many, many other types of services bloggers may offer through their blogs — including photography, freelance writing, editing, consulting, and coaching.
Sometimes these services are aimed at other bloggers or online entrepreneurs, and sometimes they’re geared toward everyday people — like families, small business owners, or local clients.
Your blog becomes both your portfolio and your platform to connect with potential clients.

How Much Money Can You Make with a Blog?
💰 The truth is — blogging can be incredibly profitable.
But how much money you make depends on a few key things: your niche, your traffic, your monetization strategy, and how consistent you are.
Some bloggers make a small part-time income — a few hundred dollars a month.
Others grow their blogs into full-blown 6- or even 7-figure businesses. Yes, seriously!
But here’s the catch…
It takes time, strategy, and effort.
Blogging isn’t a “get rich quick” scheme — it’s more like building a digital business from scratch.

How Does Blogging Actually Work?
At its heart, blogging is actually very simple. Let’s break it down super easy…

Here’s how it works step-by-step:
- 💻 First, you set up your blog (aka your website).

Sounds simple, right?
Well… that’s the foundation. But if you want to turn your blog into a business (not just a hobby), there’s more to it.
To grow and make money from blogging, you’ll also want to:
- 📣 Promote your blog posts (on social media, email, and beyond)

💰 How Much Does It Cost to Start a Blog?
One of the BEST things about blogging?
It’s one of the most affordable ways to start a business online. 🙌
You can start a blog for FREE, or if you’re ready to take your blog to the next level, this could be done for a minimal investment around $100 or less, depending on what tools and extras you choose — that’s a tiny investment compared to starting a traditional business (which can cost thousands 💸).
Here’s what you’ll typically need to pay for:
✅ Domain Name
This is your blog’s web address (like YourBlogName.com) — usually around $10–$15/year.
✅ Hosting
This is where your blog “lives” online — most beginner-friendly plans cost $2–$10/month (billed annually).
Optional, but helpful investments:
- 🎨 Premium Theme – to make your blog look professional and on-brand
- 🔌 Plugins – to add features like email opt-ins, SEO tools, etc.
- 🎓 Courses & Trainings – to help you launch faster and smarter, instead of wasting time guessing
